Drawing of what Ancient Greeks thought afterlife was like |
Ancient Greeks believed that there was an afterlife of the underworld. They believed that the spirits of the dead went after the dead. Unless proper funerals were performed, they believed the person would never reach the underworld, and would haunt the upper world instead as a ghost. There was believed to be 3 main underworlds, The place of Hades was ruled by the god named Hades, who was Zeus’ brother.Hades was considered the enemy to all life and was hated by both the gods and men; sacrifices and prayers did not include him . He was also not a tormenter of the dead, and sometimes considered the "Zeus of the dead" because he was hospitable to them Another realm was called Tartarus, which was the place where the damned were thought to go, a place of torment. The third realm, called Elysium, was a peasant place where the virtuous dead and initiates in the mystery cults were said to dwell.
